Spring’s bloom is in full swing, bringing to mind growth, replenishment, and rejuvenation. Scenes of foraging animals, the scent of damp, green grass and droplets on rustling tree leaves float to the surface after a good rain. These associations remind us about the true interconnectedness of our experience with nature and nurtures a respect only possible with that awareness when it comes to our impact and the products we consume. In the spirit of the season we renew our commitment to staying informed about all things cruelty-free and sharing that compassion with our beloved community.
Cruelty-free progress today:
Although there’s been improvement in the prevalence of animal testing in the industry, there’s still a long way to go to end these harmful practices. While a growing list of countries has banned animal testing, companies are using law loopholes to continue testing during some portion of their offshore product formulation process. A common practice is for companies in banned countries to pay for testing in places that actually still require it, like China, as long as other non-animal testing data is also included in their process. Big brands that have been confirmed to do this include Clinique, Maybelline, and Benefit, just to name a few.
How is animal testing justified today?
There are claims by governing and regulating bodies that animal testing is needed to show safety for workers handling products, however many studies have shown that often what’s deemed safe on tests with animals fails human tests, due to biological and environmental differences. In other words, animal testing is not reliable, and therefore not worth harm.
Alternate testing methods:
Following the push to ban animal testing, there have been a number of alternate testing methods developed and reviewed.
Should any ingredient’s safety necessitate animal testing beyond the above alternatives, we should ask ourselves why we’re working with something so potentially harmful to a living being.
Word to the wise:
As we know the cosmetic and skincare industry is rife with claims for the cleanest, the most natural, compassionate, vegan, eco-friendly, and so on. Consumers have a mountain of a task trying to understand what is truly what without any real agreement on legal definitions and requirements, made much more complicated by international law and “workarounds.”
We stand behind a clear cut definition of cruelty-free, where it applies to any part of the supply chain of products. Many companies strive toward this ideal falling short using animal products, however to truly embody the goal in full, ingredients and products must also be vegan. The bottom line is that many companies can call themselves cruelty-free and still test in other, more lax countries.
Though cruelty-free products tend to contain less synthetics, and often are natural and organic, the shift in consumer informed investment is a slow climb. Movements shifting deeply-rooted, convenient, and cost saving practices have led to companies taking shortcuts, and strategies in bad conscience. Investment in the health of our planet and its creatures, human or otherwise, stays at the base of every choice we make as a brand, and as consumers. This springtime, our values are renewed together with those of our community. Stay healthy, friends.

]]>The skin is our largest organ, working magically to protect us and decipher the various environmental inputs that it comes in contact with. We put it through the wringer with exposure to all that is good and bad out there. Sometimes our skincare routine can be our only time with ourselves and our intentional time with someone we love. A great body butter with healthy ingredients and elevating aroma can be shared as a sensitive way to express affection and/or desire, increasing your awareness in love and care for yourself and others.
As we churn through days packed with duty and speed, our attention is pulled in thousands of directions, zooming us in on all that’s required to maintain our lifestyles, care for loved ones, and multi-task to extremes. It’s easy to miss red flags and cues our bodies send to alert us to issues that may trigger illness on a physical or mental level.
Implications of deprivation and treatment
One trend observed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic has been what’s known as touch starvation or deprivation. In its extremity this state can lead to depression, anxiety, and increases in the stress hormone cortisol. The biological need especially apparent with baby development immediately from birth continues throughout life and is often placed at level with other basic needs like food, water, and air.
Besides the well researched effects of touch on the thriving of newborns and infants, some studies have shown that touch can have beneficial effects on elderly people with Alzheimer’s. Studies have shown that touch strategies have profound effects on children with behavioral and trauma challenges. Even the smallest gestures of touch from friends, family, or partners reach deeper into our well-being than we might imagine.
The benefits of social touch
Stress Reduction: Touch triggers the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone" or "bonding hormone." Oxytocin helps to reduce stress and anxiety levels, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.
Improved Immune Function: Research suggests that regularly experiencing touch can boost the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells, which help fight off infections and illnesses.
Enhanced Emotional Bonding: Touch plays a fundamental role in building and maintaining emotional connections between individuals. It fosters feelings of trust, empathy, and intimacy, strengthening relationships.
Pain Relief: Gentle touch can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers produced by the body. This can help alleviate physical discomfort and reduce perception of pain.
Improved Mental Health: Touch has been shown to improve mood and decrease feelings of loneliness and depression. It provides a sense of comfort and reassurance, promoting overall psychological well-being.
Reduced Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: Engaging in comforting touch can lead to a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure, promoting cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of heart-related conditions.
Enhanced Communication: Touch can convey a wide range of emotions and intentions, often serving as a nonverbal form of communication in ways that words alone cannot.
Stimulation of the Nervous System: Human touch activates pressure receptors under the skin, sending signals to the brain that can promote relaxation and decrease stress responses. It also helps regulate the nervous system, promoting overall balance and well-being.
Improved Sleep Quality: Gentle touch has been shown to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. It can help individuals fall asleep faster and experience deeper, more restorative sleep.
Promotion of Growth and Development: Human touch is essential for the healthy development of infants and children. Skin-to-skin contact, in particular, has been shown to promote bonding between parents and babies, regulate body temperature, and support early cognitive and emotional development.
Social touch is a fundamental aspect of human experience with physical, emotional, and psychological benefits. Incorporating regular, positive touch into daily life can lead to improved well-being and stronger interpersonal connections. It holds power to bind and break connections and have profound effects on feelings of safety, and well-being. It is our first sense to develop, the first form of communication we can access, and the means with which we learn and develop our sense of self.
Truly healthy skincare reaches beyond the skin, working to improve levels of wellness and connection. Touch and skincare go hand in hand as we work to stay in tune with ourselves and one another in the currents of a post pandemic, individualized trending society.
All hearts and flowers aside this Valentine’s Day, the gift of time, touch, and loving attention to yourself and to another, can start with the simple beauty of a caress.

A Brief History of Aromatherapy
The term Aromatherapy was coined by French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosee in 1928, modernizing and expanding on the deeply rooted venerated practice dating back to 3500 BC. An integral part of ancient sensual and health routines, aromas of essential oils have long been used as powerful triggers of physical response and sense memory.
Aromatherapy has been practiced in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, and China. Its almost mystical reach has survived through time, lending weight to nature’s healing power, practicality, and accessibility.
Aside from the legend of Cleopatra, ancient Egyptians were known to create oil combinations to support or induce states of meditation, war, and love. Studied by monks, philosophers, and great thinkers throughout cultures and ages, this time-tested study of nature remains a worthwhile quest for seekers of emotional and physical wellness.
Unlocking the Psychology
Inhaling essential oils stimulates the limbic system which is the part of the brain were moods and emotions are centered. Strong associations are created by way of scent, which, when combined with touch, sets a stage for relaxation, stress relief, and romantic connection, all gems that been known about the effects of aromatherapy.
Often we find that the keys to unlocking emotional and sensual connection lie in the barriers we constantly work through within ourselves on a daily basis. Stress, pain, sleep issues and other similar struggles tend to poison the well of wellness, interrupting our ability to stay in tune with our bodies and those of our loved ones. Aromatherapy nourishes an environment in which we can refocus on sensation, in effect, reducing the noise.
Aromatherapy as Part of Daily Life
In the spirit of February, the month to celebrate love, reigniting a connection to self and to others by way of sense memory and mental health care, is the best gift that could be given. We've heard time and time again that refilling personal wellness coffers often increases the ability and agility of that expression to those we care for.
Taking the ancient Egyptians practice further, we can create a personal experience with combinations of oils connecting us more closely to our bodies in a world of overstimulation. A steady hand through time remains a worthy guide back to self, keeping us in step with nature and one another.

]]>Since the resurgence of interest in natural, clean skin care products, curiosity has grown with educated consumers seeking the best and purest options available. Favorites like shea butter, coconut oil, and cocoa butter are common ingredients sought after for their nutrient-rich properties.
There are a few lesser known but thoroughly time-tested hero ingredients ripe with powerful, effective, and gentle healing. As with many legendary skin care practices, knowledge about the wide ranging benefits of using mango butter and olive oil has waxed and waned over the years but is now coming back to the forefront as part of the clean beauty movement.
Mango Butter and Olive Oil Uses Over Time:
🥭 Mangoes are native to South Asia where indigenous communities have long used them in traditional skin care routines for soothing dry and irritated skin and to promote overall skin health.
🫒 Olive oil use dates back to ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt in public baths, in cosmetics, ointments, perfumes, and much more.
🫒 Medieval Europeans considered olive oil a beauty treatment for the upper class.
🫒 Grown in plenty across the Mediterranean, olives have been and continue to be an essential ingredient for health, both internally and externally.
Benefits of Mango Butter:
🥭 Moisturization: Mango butter is highly emollient, meaning it can provide deep moisturization to the skin, keeping it soft and hydrated, particularly beneficial for individuals with dry or sensitive skin. Mango butter is lightweight, making it a versatile option for various skin types, including those with sensitive or oily skin.
🥭 Rich in Antioxidants: Mango butter contains antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants play a crucial role in maintaining skin health and preventing premature aging.
🥭 Skin Repair: The presence of fatty acids in mango butter, such as oleic acid and stearic acid, can contribute to skin repair and regeneration, leaving skin soft and supple. This makes it useful for addressing skin issues such as scars, stretch marks, and fine lines.
🥭 Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Mango butter has anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe irritated skin and alleviate symptoms of skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.
🥭 UV Protection: While not a substitute for dedicated sunscreen, mango butter contains a small amount of natural sun protection. It may provide some defense against harmful UV rays, although it is not sufficient on its own for sun protection.
🥭 Collagen Production: Mango butter is believed to stimulate collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a protein that helps maintain the skin's elasticity and firmness, contributing to a more youthful appearance.
🥭 Improves Skin Tone and Texture: Regular use of mango butter may help improve skin tone and texture, resulting in a smoother and more even appearance.
🥭 Hair Care: Mango butter is often used in hair products to moisturize and nourish the hair, reduce frizz, and promote a healthy scalp.
🥭 Non-Comedogenic: Mango butter is non-comedogenic, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores. This makes it suitable for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin.
Benefits of Olive Oil:
🫒 Moisturization: Olive oil is a rich source of monounsaturated fats and squalene, which provide deep hydration to the skin. It helps in preventing moisture loss, making the skin soft and supple.
🫒 Antioxidant Protection: Olive oil contains antioxidants, such as vitamin E and polyphenols, that help protect the skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage. This can contribute to maintaining a youthful and healthy complexion.
🫒 Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The presence of polyphenols in olive oil may have anti-inflammatory effects, making it beneficial for soothing irritated or inflamed skin. It may ease symptoms of dryness and itching in conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
🫒 Wound Healing: Olive oil has been traditionally used for wound healing due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It may aid in the recovery process and reduce the appearance of scars.
🫒 Anti-Aging Effects: Regular application of olive oil may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The antioxidants in olive oil can support collagen production and protect the skin from premature aging.
🫒 Sunburn Relief: Olive oil can provide relief from sunburn when applied topically. Its moisturizing properties help soothe the skin, and the antioxidants may contribute to repairing sun-damaged cells.
🫒 Makeup Remover: Olive oil can serve as an effective and natural makeup remover. It helps dissolve makeup, including waterproof products, without causing irritation to the skin.
🫒Exfoliation: When mixed with natural exfoliants like sugar or coffee grounds, olive oil can be used as a gentle exfoliator. It helps remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and refreshed.
🫒 Cuticle Care: Applying olive oil to the cuticles can help soften them, making it easier to push back or trim the cuticles. This promotes healthier nails and prevents hangnails.
Natural treasures like these work magic on many levels and, as we know, beauty is not just skin deep. Beauty and health are a lifelong pursuit with knowledge as the main key for thriving. Looking back across time informs clean skin care seekers toward improvement and purity in approaches to health and well-being. We are here for it.

]]>What happens to our skin during cooler weather?
Filaggrin, a crucial protein in our skin for maintaining barrier function and natural moisture decreases in winter as well as with age and hormonal changes. Dry, cold weather, low humidity, and indoor heating, dehydrates skin further and worsens skin conditions for many. Environmental factors such as allergens and temperature extremes can affect filaggrin function, contributing to barrier loss, leaving skin more vulnerable to pathogens and irritants.
Tis the season to be jolly so yes, cold weather equals celebratory events, and social occasions driving us to drink less water and draw us toward more dehydrating substances such as alcohol and caffeine.
What skin conditions are triggered by cooler weather?
Rosacea - small, red, pus-filled bumps on face
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) - itchy inflammation of the skin
Psoriasis - skin cells build up to form scales and itchy, dry patches
Keratosis Pilaris - KP or chicken skin - rough patches with small acne-like bump
Tips to for a feel good cold season
Limit or avoid foods that cause inflammation (certain individuals are more sensitive to these than others)
Investment in total body care is a lifelong journey, one we are all-in with. We’re here to add to the tool kit, spreading empowerment and love this season.

The research
In 2020 Bazaarvoice, a consumer shopping network and Influenster, a social shopping platform interviewed 24,000 women worldwide about their shopping priorities for clean beauty products. They found that two thirds sought more transparency in their clean beauty products. 61% of participants felt products used “clean” vaguely and more interestingly, only 1% relied on brand advertising for information about clean beauty or product ingredients and sought out information elsewhere. In short, it’s clear that brand distrust is heightened and consumers seek reassurance in transparency.
While it’s true that the industry is nowhere near clearly defined standards and definitions of what is clean, natural, and organic, steps toward this shared goal can be taken by engaging authentically with consumers and staying true to stated principles. A key piece of this effort to move the industry in the right direction is the sense of relationship with consumers that forges trust and shared goals, upholding personal responsibility on both ends to invest in and create improvement in health and in the skin care industry.
To this end at Ellovi we keep to minimal ingredients and well-vetted suppliers, while maintaining a healthy connection from start to finish with every product we make. Integrity within ourselves, and our relationships infuses what we create and share with you.
What do we look for in our suppliers? Alignment in values
Our suppliers and their facilities conduct regular third party testing and hold certifications and technical documentation accessible for the below standards:
Setting the bar high for responsible creation and consumption is a commitment that takes study and steadfastness, an undertaking of cause and effect, demonstrating interconnectedness. We’re here as a point in the evolving constellation of the clean beauty movement, we’re here for the journey toward health and peace of mind with you.

Growing interest in wellness has turned essential oils into a booming industry, which means oils are more accessible, but also often not authentically made or marketed by some suppliers. Consistent with the goal to keep skin health care simple, transparent, and beneficial, we’re wading through the barrage of information (and misinformation) out there to hone in on what you need to know.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that contain beneficial properties and unique aromatic flavors. The extracts are created through either steam/water distillation or cold pressing.
Benefits of essential oils:

What to keep in mind:
Concerns about some essential oil use have stemmed from its incorrect application and source issues.

]]>Just as you look at nutritional facts before buying food (we hope), so it should be with skin nourishment. With all these unfamiliar ingredients, it’s easy to just hurry up and buy it, and move on.
A few main villains in skin care products to steer clear of:
Petrolatum-mineral oils create a barrier on skin to prevent moisture loss but this can also clog pores to prevent skin from breathing. Exposure has been strongly linked to skin cancer. You’ll hear arguments that properly refined petrolatum has no health concerns, however, petrolatum is not often fully refined in the US which means chemical contaminants can be high and your pores will take the punishment. Petroleum derived skin products? Hard pass.
Parabens are used to prolong product shelf life. These have been linked to endocrine disruption, potentially causing hormonal interference.
What does this actually mean? Let’s break it down.
Hormonal interference can disrupt male and female reproductive system functioning, impacting fertility, development, and more. Besides that scary thought, parabens have been linked to cancer as well as triggers to allergic skin reactions. Give this one a wide berth!
With all the hidden dangers out there, It’s a relief to know that we can take care of our skin with ingredients that don’t need to be pumped up and fabricated with an epic list of additives, dyes, and artificial fragrances. Healing is and has been accessible using what nature already gives us.

]]>This one mystical trick can help reduce acne and rejuvenate your skin at the same time....
Cleanse your face with oils daily
This might be the single most counterintuitive thing you've ever heard, but here's why it works...
Acne occurs when a follicle in your pores becomes blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. This happens when your skin's regulatory system loses its state of balance and is either producing too much oil, allowing dead skin cells to accumulate, or building up an excess of bacteria.
Many people try to resolve this by slathering their faces with harsh chemicals and detergents. These can work, for a minute, but ultimately only perpetuates the skin's state of imbalance and will likely cause additional problems down the road.
The best way to tackle acne is to work harmoniously to support the skin's natural rejuvenation & purification process. Oil cleansing is the ancient art that does just that! When you cleanse your skin with oils regularly, you protect the natural lipid layer, lift excess oil, maintain the "good oils" and provide a gentle and nourishing cleanse. It doesn't disrupt your skin's natural process and helps to support your natural state of balance.
You can learn how to oil cleanse here.
Butter is not like other products on the market. It's oil-based, made with just 6 plant ingredients, and is completely free from synthetic chemicals and preservatives. It works differently than other lotions and moisturizers on the market. Here's what to except when you make the switch:
When we say it's rich, we mean it. This is because we use no water. You need only a small amount with each use. Unlike water-based lotions that evaporate, Butter soaks in and lasts longer.
When switching from synthetic products to natural, your skin will likely require a detox period. This is normal and not to be feared. It typically takes anywhere from 2-14 days. Once your skin reacclimates you will begin to see a new type of balance and reduced sensitivity.
Nourishing with oils is especially helpful because it lifts excess sebum, cleans pores, reduces dryness, irritation, discoloration and so much more. Everyone will experience slightly different results. The way to get the most out of it is to use it daily and follow a regular self-care routine.
+ Bonus if you drink a lot of water
Oil cleansing is one of my favorite little-known secrets of non-toxic skincare. It’s a bit counter-intuitive for some as you actually use oil to remove dirt and, yes, oil from your skin, but trust me - it works wonders! Here's How:
Step 1:
Apply a penny-sized amount of Butter or another oil to your fingertips and massage your face in a circular motion for 1 minute.
Step 2:
Take a warm damp washcloth and hold it over your face for 30 seconds. This step is important because it helps your pores to open and brings impurities to the surface. Wipe your face with the cloth until your skin is clean and smooth.
What to Expect:
Oil cleansing often involves a detox and acclimation period. It's normal for skin to have a reaction period of between 2-10 days when switching skincare methods. Once your skin has adjusted you will likely experience countless benefits such as:
• Reduced acne
• Softer skin.
• Reduction in puffiness, blotchiness, and sunspots.
• Regulated oils (yes, less oily!)
* Healthier, more vibrant, glowing skin.

]]>Constant hand washing and sanitizing strips away our skin's natural moisture barrier and leaves our hands parched and dry.
Here are 3 easy tips to keep your manos looking amazing:
Tip 1: Use Gentle Soaps Whenever Possible
When washing our hands dozens of times a day, the soaps we use are that much more impactful. Many of them are loaded with harsh detergents and ingredients that strip away our natural oils. Try switching to gentle plant-based soaps that get the job done and are gentle at the same time!
Tip 2: Marula Oil — Your Skin's Holy Grail
The ancient African fruit marula produces one of the richest healing oils on the planet. It's jam-packed with antioxidants and has over 4x the vitamin-c of an orange! It's anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and provides deep healing that is perfect for all skin types. When you apply marula topically, these oils are rapidly absorbed into your skin delivering healing and moisturizing benefits that will leave your skin with an undeniable glow! Because of these incredible healing properties, marula trees are often considered sacred in Africa. They serve as community gathering sites. We're so in love with Marula that it's in nearly all Ellovi products.
Tip 3: Moisturize After You Wash!
We promise you that taking that one extra step to moisturize after you wash or sanitize will make all the difference! Just keep a jar of Ellovi Butter near your sink. Once you start the habit it will become easy and your hands will never look better.
