Summertime Skincare Hero: Avocado

Summer’s just around the corner and we’re already out there soaking up Vitamin D, happy to get a break from volatile weather and layered clothing. Each season brings its own unique beauty as well as challenges for our bodies, starting, and ending for our biggest organ – the skin.

As we expose skin to warmer weather, we increase exposure to humidity (or dryness depending on your locale) and ultraviolet radiation.

☀️  Summertime skin issues:

  • Sunburn – prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to redness, swelling, and peeling.

  • Dehydration – heat can increase sweating which depletes skin of moisture leading to dryness.

  • Hyperpigmentation – prolonged sun exposure can result in dark spots, freckles, and uneven skin tone due to increased melanin production.

  • Heat Rash – heat and humidity can cause blockages in sweat glands leading to itchy, red rashes, also known as prickly heat.

  • Acne – sweating, in combination with oil and dirt, can clog pores.

  • Increased oiliness – heat can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil that can cause an oily complexion and block pores.

  • Premature aging – UV exposure accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, contributing to wrinkles and fine lines.

  • Exacerbation of skin conditions – summertime activities and sun exposure can trigger flare ups of eczema symptoms and increased exposure to air conditioning can do the same for psoriasis symptoms

Luckily a return to natural skincare ingredients has kept us well equipped with versatile oils and butters that can get right to work on skin issues with often surprising and swift results. Welcome our new favorite avocado!

The benefits of avocados for skincare have been touted since the time of ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas. Today’s scientific findings underscore the impressive nutrient richness of avocados, making them the ideal fruit – yes, fruit – to alleviate a plethora of skin woes.

🥑  Skincare benefits of avocados

  • Deep hydration – rich in oleic acid and Omega-9 fatty acids, avocado butter helps nourish dry and sensitive skin

  • Antioxidants – vitamins E and C protect skin from free radical damage, promoting  a youthful appearance

  • Collagen production – Vitamin C content stimulates collagen production to maintain elasticity and firmness

  • Soothes inflammation – anti-inflammatory properties and high lipid content ease discomfort associated with skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema

  • Improves skin texture – regular use can leave skin smoother and more supple

  • Sun care – sunburn alleviation and minor UV protection by way of carotenoids

  • Strengthens skin barrier – vitamin B3 helps reinforce skin’s natural barrier to protect against moisture loss and environmental stressors

  • And that glow! – all thanks to high levels of vitamins A, D, and E

  • Eating more avocados may even lead to increased ability to repair skin and see results!

It goes without saying that we love to look and feel our best year-round, but summer has its own dreamy nostalgia, with recent and older memories and associations with cooling drinks, desserts, times with family and friends, clothing that makes us feel beautiful, and of course, a sun-kissed, happy and healthy you.
