Nail & Skin Health: Know Your Ingredients

Taking a deeper dive into the world of skincare has opened our eyes to the simplicity and effectiveness of natural product formulations as well as the dangers of popular ingredients used across a wide range of products out there.

Traditional hand lotions and creams on the market, even in spas and nail salons, are riddled with harmful ingredients that absorb into the body and leave hands and nails wanting more.  Hard working hands alert us loudly when care is needed, so let’s review the do’s and don’ts.

Ingredients to look out for:

Formaldehyde Releasers (e.g., DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea)

  • Use: Preservatives
  • Effects:
    • Known allergens and irritants
    • Possible carcinogens with prolonged exposure

Mineral Oil (petroleum-derived)

  • Use: Emollient and moisturizer
  • Effects:
    • Can clog pores and trap dirt/bacteria
    • If not properly refined, may contain contaminants

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)

  • Use: Emulsifiers and skin conditioning agents
  • Effects:
    • Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (a potential carcinogen)
    • May compromise the skin barrier

Triclosan

  • Use: Antibacterial agent
  • Effects:
    • Endocrine disruptor
    • Can contribute to antibiotic resistance

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

  • Use: Preservative
  • Effects:
    • Potential allergen
    • Linked to liver, kidney, and thyroid issues in high doses
