A consequence of mass production and modern plastic use has resulted in the growing presence of microplastics, tiny plastic particles that have been found in our air, soil, and water. There’s now a growing concern over the impact of these particles on our health that has sparked awareness in the clothing, food, beverage, and skincare industries.
A 2020 study found that more than 9 out of 10 products from major skincare brands (including cleansers, lotions, sunscreens, and makeup) contained microplastic ingredients. Now, more than ever, it’s important to stay in the know when making consumer decisions. Let’s get to it.
What Are Microplastics in Skincare?
Microplastics (less than 5 mm in size) are either:
- Intentionally added to products (called primary microplastics) for texture, film-forming for locking in moisture, or exfoliating purposes, or
- Formed from the breakdown of larger plastic ingredients (secondary microplastics).
Common Microplastic Ingredients in Skincare Products:
Look for these synthetic polymers on labels:
- Polyethylene (PE)
- Polypropylene (PP)
- Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)
- Nylon-12 / Nylon-6
- Acrylates copolymer / Crosspolymer
- Polyquaternium compounds
- Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Concerns About Microplastics in Skincare:
Environmental impact
- Rinse-off products (like cleansers and scrubs) wash microplastics into waterways.
- They accumulate in oceans, harm marine life, and enter the food chain.
Skin and health concerns
- Long-term skin exposure may disrupt the skin barrier especially when inflamed or damaged, triggering oxidative stress, inflammation. 2024 study
- Potential endocrine disruption due to absorbed plasticizers or contaminants. BPA, phthalates, PFAS are associated with reproductive issues, metabolic disease, cancer, and neurological harm
- Can accumulate in the body via absorption or ingestion (through lip products, for example).
- Cosmetic products containing these may cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular apoptosis, which can accelerate skin aging and damage the skin’s barrier function. 2023 study
Brands with Known Microplastic Usage
- Clinique – Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm contains polyethylene
- Banila Co Clean It Zero Original Cleansing Balm – Contains ammonium methacrylate copolymer, despite claims to the contrary
- Balea, Nivea, Garnier, Dove, L’Oréal (including La Roche‑Posay), Neutrogena, and Avon – Highlighted by environmental groups as containing microplastic additives like acrylates copolymers, acrylates crosspolymers, or polyquaterniums
Many mainstream products still use microplastics or liquid synthetic polymers, especially those with smooth, silky textures. Some brands are making commitments to eliminate them, but checking labels and keeping educated remains the best way to protect our health.
The amount of due diligence required to keep on top of all things that may harm us can be overwhelming. Opting for clean skincare with your trusted, transparent brand with recognizable ingredients, is a good start.
