Beautifully bottled brands in glittering, elegant packaging tout the magic of their products to turn back the hands of time, to lighten, lessen, tighten, and tone. It’s exhausting!
Just as you look at nutritional facts before buying food (we hope), so it should be with skin nourishment. With all these unfamiliar ingredients, it’s easy to just hurry up and buy it, and move on.
A few main villains in skin care products to steer clear of:
Petrolatum-mineral oils create a barrier on skin to prevent moisture loss but this can also clog pores to prevent skin from breathing. Exposure has been strongly linked to skin cancer. You’ll hear arguments that properly refined petrolatum has no health concerns, however, petrolatum is not often fully refined in the US which means chemical contaminants can be high and your pores will take the punishment. Petroleum derived skin products? Hard pass.
Parabens are used to prolong product shelf life. These have been linked to endocrine disruption, potentially causing hormonal interference.
What does this actually mean? Let’s break it down.
Hormonal interference can disrupt male and female reproductive system functioning, impacting fertility, development, and more. Besides that scary thought, parabens have been linked to cancer as well as triggers to allergic skin reactions. Give this one a wide berth!
